EVANDER - Greek king who founded city at Pallanteum, the site that would later become Rome. Aeneas visits him and gets help in Book VIII. FAUNUS - Old Italian god of woods and agriculture. FURIES - Ferocious, avenging goddesses. Allecto is a Fury.
GOLDEN BOUGH - Mythical symbol of immortality. Aeneas must obtain it before he can enter the underworld and be sure of coming out alive. HADES - Name for the underworld. HARPIES - Half-bird, half-woman creatures who drive the Trojans off the Strophades islands in Book III. HECTOR - Trojan hero and son of King Priam who dies defending Troy. Achilles dragged his body around the walls of Troy. HECUBA - Priam's wife and Queen of Troy. HELEN - Spartan woman, married to Menelaus, who was seduced by (or eloped with) Paris, a Trojan, and thus caused the Trojan War. HELENUS - Son of Priam. He later marries Hector's widow Andromache and settles at Buthrotum, where Aeneas meets him. HERCULES - A Greek and Roman hero, renowned for his phenomenal strength. HESPERIA - Another name for Italy. IARBAS - King of Mauretania and one of Dido's rejected suitors. IDA - Mountain near Troy.
