IULUS - Another name for Ascanius.

JANUS - Two-headed god of the Romans. The opening of the doors of his temple symbolized the beginning of war.

JUNO - A goddess married to Jupiter, king of the gods. Furious at Trojans.

JUPITER - King of the gods.

JUTURNA - A nymph, sister of Turnus.

LABYRINTH - Built by Daedalus for the minotaur in Crete.

LAOCOON - Priest of Apollo and Neptune who is killed by serpents at Troy when he warns against the Trojan horse.

LAOMEDON - One of the founders of Troy.

LATINS - Natives of Latium in Italy.

LATINUS - King of the Latins.

LATIUM - Plain of west and central Italy where Aeneas fights to build his city.

LATONA - Mother of Apollo and Diana.


LAURENTIUM - Capital of Latium.

LAUSUS - Son of Mezentius, who is killed by Aeneas.

LAVINIA - Daughter of king Latinus who had been engaged to Turnus, but who is destined to marry Aeneas.

LAVINIUM - City that Aeneas will build.

LETHE - One of the rivers of the underworld.

MARCELLUS - Son-in-law of Augustus, who died very young. Mentioned in Book VI in parade of great Romans.

MARS - Roman god of war.

MENELAUS - Helen's husband and leader of Sparta. One of the Greek warriors at Troy.

MERCURY - Jupiter's messenger.
