AUSONIA - Another name for Italy.

AVERNUS - Cave near Cumae where Aeneas enters underworld. Also another name for underworld.

BACCHUS - God of wine. Also associated with frenzy.

BELLONA - Roman goddess of war.

BRUNDISIUM - Place where Virgil died, on east coast of Italy.

BUTHROTUM - On west coast of Greece. Place where Aeneas stops and sees miniature version of Troy and meets Helenus and Andromache.

CACUS - A horrible, fire-breathing monster that terrorized Pallanteum (the site of Rome). Killed by Hercules.

CAESAR - The Roman dictator, Julius Caesar. Augustus, who was his adopted son, also used this title.

CAIETA - Nurse of Aeneas, who dies right before the Trojans reach Latium.

CALAENO - The leader of the Harpies who attacks the Trojans in Book III. Prophesies their future in Italy.

CALCHAS - Greek prophet at Troy.

CALLIOPE - The Muse of epic poetry.

CAMILLA - Warrior maiden in Italy. Helps Turnus and is slain by Trojans. Sacred to Diana.


CARTHAGE - Dido's kingdom in northern Africa.

CASSANDRA - Daughter of Priam, king of Troy. Prophetess fated never to be believed.

CERBERUS - The three-headed dog of the underworld.

CERES - Roman goddess of agriculture.

CHARON - Ferryman in the underworld.

CHARYBDIS - Sea monster who creates whirlpool that sucks in ships in the strait between Italy and Sicily.

CIRCE - An enchantress encountered by Ulysses in the Odyssey. Aeneas avoids her.

CLIO - Muse of history.
