ACHAEMENIDES - Greek men left behind by Ulysses on Sicily in land of the Cyclopes. Rescued by Trojans in Book III. ACHATES - Aeneas' faithful companion and armor-bearer. ACHERON - One of the rivers of the underworld. ACHILLES - Greek hero of Homer's Iliad; known for his wrath; killed during Trojan War. ACTIUM - Site of Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. in which Augustus defeated Antony and Cleopatra. Briefly visited by Aeneas and Trojans. ADONIS - Beautiful youth loved by Aphrodite (Venus). AENEADAE - Another name for the Trojans. AENEAS - Hero of the Aeneid.
AEOLUS - King of the winds. AJAX - Greek hero in Trojan War. ALBA LONGA - Town near Rome, founded by Aeneas' son Ascanius. ALLECTO - One of the Furies, used by Juno to incite Turnus to war. AMATA - Wife of Latinus, the king of the Latins, and mother of Lavinia. She is poisoned by Allecto and refuses to allow Lavinia to marry Aeneas. She prefers Turnus. ANCHISES - Aeneas' aged father. ANDROMACHE - Hector's wife. After Hector died at Troy, Andromache married Helenus and lived at Buthrotum, one of the places Aeneas visits in Book III. ANNA - Dido's sister and confidante. APOLLO - God of the sun and able to foretell the future. ASCANIUS - Aeneas' young son. Also known as Iulus. AUGUSTUS - Roman emperor (30 B.C.-14 A.D.). AURORA - Goddess of dawn.
