v) Coccyx
(Fig. 20.13). (1) Small triangular bone formed by the fusion of
four coccygeal vertebrae (in diminishing order). (2) It has an
oval facet for articulation with the apex of the sacrum. (3) Two
bony coccygeal cornua articulate with sacrum, to which intercornual
ligaments are attached. (4) Transverse processes are very small
and project upwards from the first coccygeal vertebra. (5) The
sacrum and coccyx in the female are less curved and are pointed more backwards
than in male an adaptation for childbirth.
