Figure 17.6 Mechanism of inspiration
Inspiration: Inspiration in man is an active
process. During inspiration the intercostal (in between the ribs)
muscles contract so that the ribs swing outwards and upwards
and increase the diameter of the thorax. At the same time
the dome-shaped diaphragm is flattened due to the contraction
of its muscles. The combined effect is to increase the capacity
of the thorax which creates a partial vacuum, as a result of which
the air is drawn into the lungs.
