Jack London

 London, Jack (1876-1916) - A self-educated American adventure
novelist who was a sailor, a tramp, and a gold miner before he
began his writing career.

His work had constant themes of survival and compassion for
the underdog. Call of the Wild (1903) - The story of Buck, a
house dog who is stolen from California and taken to Alaska to
be a sled-dog. Abused at first, Buck reverts to his wild instincts
in order to survive. This book made London instantly famous
and remains one of his most popular works.
