EXAMPLE 15 Solve tan-1(x) = tan-1(1-x) = tan-1(4/3)

Solution : Let = tan -1 x and = tan-1(1 - x) then,

tan = x and tan = 1 - x

Taking tangent of both sides of the equation,

Then 4x2 - 4x + 4 = 3 i.e. 4x2 - 4x + 1 = 0

\ (2x - 1)2 = 0 Þ 2x - 1 = 0 i.e. x = 1/2
