27.1 Diamagnetism, Paramagnetism and Ferromagnetism
The behavior of material substances, under the influence of a uniform magnetic field applied, can be
classified into three different types.
(1) Substances such as Bismuth, Gold and Water are repelled away. This behavior is called
diamagnetism.
(2) Substances such as Aluminium, Sodium and Tungsten are weakly attracted. Their behavior is
known as Paramagnetism.
(3) Substances like Iron, Cobalt and Nickel are very strongly
attracted. Their behavior is known as
Ferromagnetism.
