4.3 : Logical Reasoning

In logical reasoning questions, you are presented with an argument or an explanation which you are asked to analyze. You may be asked to describe the argument, draw conclusions from it, attack or defend it, or just find the assumption that lies behind it. No knowledge of formal logic is required. While reading the passages, statements or conversation you must avoid being influenced by your own personal opinions. It may helpful to draw rough diagrams or simple charts in attempting to answer the questions.

Remember, no knowledge of formal logic is required. As you read the brief passage you must follow the line of reasoning using the common sense standard of logic. Rely on common sense and use what is presented or implied by the passage.

Suggested Answering Approach:

1. Read the question first before reading the passage and mark the key words.

2. Read the passage, focus on elements important to the question asked.

3. Read the question again.

4. Do the analysis of the answer choices by eliminating those that are irrelevant, inconsistent, or beyond the scope of the passage.

5. Of the remaining answer choices, choose the best answer.
