Example Three consecutive even natural numbers are such that five times of the smallest exceeds three times the largest by 28. Find the middle number.

Solution :

You are looking for the middle number.

Let ’ x ’ be the required middle number

Hence the three consecutive even natural numbers are x - 2, x, x+2

Setting up equation as -

Five times of the smallest exceeds three times the largest by28

5 ( x - 2) = 3 ( x + 2 ) + 28

\ 5 x - 10 = 3 x + 6 +28

\ 5 x - 10 = 3 x + 34

\ 5 x - 3 x = 34 + 10

\ 2 x = 44

\ x = 22

Therefore, the middle number is 22.
