Graphing a straight line using slope and intercepts

Technique

  1. Express the equation in y - form
  2. Locate the y - intercept on the graph
  3. Write the slope as a ratio and find the other point on the line
  4. Draw the line through these two points.

Example Graph the linear equations, using slope and y - intercept.

1) x + y = 1    2) 3x - 2y = 4    3) 2x - 4y = 0

Solution :

1.       x + y =1

\ slope = -1 and y - intercept = 1

Now locate 1 on the y - axis, the point is A(0,1).

Slope = -1 or (for every 1 up go 1 to left)

or (for every 1 down go 1 to right )
