Wharton, Edith (1862-1937) - American novelist and short-story
writer, she was a friend and follower of Henry James. Wharton, a
member of a prominent New York family, is best known for her
portrayals of aristocratic society. Ethan Frome (1911) - The story
of a poor man, Ethan Frome, who is married to a whiny wife.
Ethan and his wife’s cousin fall in love then try to end their
hapless romance by steering their sled into a tree. Because it deals
with the lower class, this may be Wharton’s least typical novel.
