Pyotor Kirilovich Bezukhov or Pierre

The illegitimate son of Count Kiril Vladimirovich Bezukhov, he becomes the heir of the Bezukhov estate. He goes through the ups and downs of life before achieving his goal.

Prince Andrei Nikolayevich Bolkonsky

Son of Nikolai Andreyevich Bolkonsky, he is dashing, daring and intelligent but arrogant. Suffering ennobles him. He fights bravely the battlefield but succumbs to the bullets of the enemy.

Count Nikolai Ilyich Rostov

Son of Count Ilya Andreyevich Rostov, he is a patriotic soldier who serves in the Pavlograd regiment and fights valiantly against the enemy. After getting married, he takes to farming.

Countess Natalya Ilyinichna Rostova Or Natasha

The extremely beautiful and intelligent daughter of Count Ilya Andreyevich Rostov, she falls in love with a few men before settling down with Pierre. From a bubbly teenager she matures into a responsible housewife.

Princess Marya Nikolayevna Bolkonskaya

Daughter of prince Nikolai Andreyevich Bolkonsky and brother of Andrei, she is plain in looks but well educated and sensible. She performs all her duties to the best of her abilities; as a devoted daughter to her moody father, dutiful guardian to her nephew, loving sister to Andrei and understanding wife to Nikolai.


Minor Characters

Prince Vasily Sergeyevich Kuragin

The head of the family of Kuragins, he is a cunning man who makes the best use of opportunities.

Prince Anatol Kuragin

Elder son of Prince Vasily, he is a handsome young man with no scruples or morals. Already married, he traps Natasha into an affair with him.

Prince Ippolit Kuragin

The younger son of Prince Vasily, he is Almost an idiot who behaves foolishly and talks out of place.

Princess Elena Vasilyevna Kuragina

The beautiful but flirtatious daughter of Prince Vasily, she marries Pierre for his money but carries on affair with many other influential men.

Prince Nikolai Andreyevich Bolkonsky

The old and eccentric father of Andrei and Marya, he acts difficult with his daughter. A true patriot, he is deeply hurt hearing about the conquest of Moscow by Napoleon.

Prince Nikolai Andreyevich Bolkonsky, The Junior Or Nikolushka

The motherless child of Prince Andrei, he grows up to be a sensitive and precocious teenager under the care of Princess Marya.

Prince Lisa Bolkonskaya

The beautiful and innocent wife of Andrei, she is simple and unassuming. She dies giving birth to her son, Nikolushka.

Count Ilya Andreyevich Rostov

The kind-hearted but impractical manager of the Rostov estate, he is devoted husband and a proud father.

Countess Natalya Rostova

The wife of Count Ilya Rostov, she is an indulgent mother. She has a delicate constitution and her health turns for the worse after the death of her younger son.
