Table of Contents | Printable Version KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS SETTING Chapter I ("Telemachus") is set in a tower on Dublin Bay at Sandycove where Stephen Dedalus lives. In Chapter II ("Nestor") the scene shifts to a school where Stephen teaches. Chapter III ("Proteus") is set on a seashore, which Stephen visits. In Chapter IV ("Calypso") the scene shifts to Leopold BloomÂ’s house at 7 Eccles Street. He goes on a brief errand to the butcher. In Chapter VI ("Hades") we follow Bloom and his fellow mourners who accompany, in a coach behind Paddy DignamÂ’s coffin to Prospects Cemetery. Chapter VII ("Aeolus") is set in the newspaper office. Chapter VIII ("Lestrygonians") is set in the streets of Dublin through which Bloom continues his wanderings. In Chapter IX ("Scylla and Charybdis") the scene shifts to the office of the Director of the National Library, Dublin. In Chapter X ("Wandering Rocks") we accompany the major characters and a host of minor characters passing through various places in Dublin. Chapter XI ("Sirens") is set in the bar of the Ormond Hotel. Chapter XII ("Cyclops") is set in Barney KiernanÂ’s tavern. Chapter XIII ("Nausicaa") is set against the background of the beach at Sandymount. In chapter XIV ("The Oxen of the Sun") the scene shifts to the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street. Chapter XV ("Circe") is set in the area of brothels and slums in Dublin. In Chapter XVI ("Eumaeus") the scene shifts to an Ice Cream Bar at Amiens Street.
