KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS

SETTING

The action of the play is concentrated in Rome and the country near it. In Rome itself the important locations include the royal palace, area near the Capital, TitusÂ’ house and the public street. The action of the play starts in an area before the capital where TitusÂ’ family tomb is located and Saturninus is made emperor. The streets of Rome witness Martius and Quintus being away to their execution and Titus lying down prostate on the street before the state of Rome. The palace houses the emperor, Tamora and her sons and Aaron. It is in the palace that she delivers AaronÂ’s black child and it is in the palace courtyard that TitusÂ’ arrows rain down on Saturninus. TitusÂ’ house occurs in several scenes where he confers with his family and finally it is in his house that the cannibalistic banquet for Tamora is arranged. And this is where Titus, Lavinia, Demetrius, Chiron, Tamora and Saturninus lose their lives.

The country-side or the forest around Rome is the location for all the action in Act II. Different parts of the forest are used for different scenes: the emperorÂ’s hunt takes place in one part, Lavinia and Bassianus are captured in a secluded, lonely part of the same forest and Lavinia is ravished and mutilated in another isolated part of it.

The plains near Rome, house Lucius and his army of Goths where Aaron and his child are bought prisoner.
