KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS
SETTING
Miss Lonelyhearts by Nathanael West analyses the lifestyle of
the urban people. It reflects the selfish, cynical and meaningless
ways in which people without faith live. Therefore, the major
action of the novel takes place in the city, which is most
probably New York (as the name of the place has never been
mentioned).
The scene shifts
to the country for some time, when Betty takes
Miss Lonelyhearts to her auntÂ’s farm in Connecticut, when he
falls ill. This change of scene brings considerable freshness into
the novel, but Miss Lonelyhearts returns to the dismal darkness
of the city, where the novel is actually set.
