Confederacy

Heth, Henry: leads an infantry brigade against BufordÂ’s defenses, mistaking the union cavalry for local militia.

Hood, John: urges Longstreet flank the UnionÂ’s right, but Longstreet cannot go against LeeÂ’s orders.

Jackson, Thomas (Stonewall): aggressive commander whose death shortly before Gettysburg forced a reorganization of LeeÂ’s army.

Kemper, James: politician from Virginia who is not fond of foreigners.

Marshall: LeeÂ’s aid, wants Stuart to be court-martialed.

Pender, William: His wife condemns him for going along with the invasion of the North and thereby becoming the aggressor

Pettigrew, James: one of three main leaders of PickettÂ’s charge.

Pickett, Sallie: PickettÂ’s young sweetheart

Rodes, Robert: Flanks union right on first day of fighting, fails to attack on second day.

Ross: the Austrian observer

Taylor, Walter: LeeÂ’s protective aide.

Trimble, Isaac: One of three main leaders of PickettÂ’s charge. Requests to be transferred away from Ewell after EwellÂ’s excessive caution allowed the retreating Federals to gain a foothold in the heights south of town.

Venable: LeeÂ’s aide, courteous and elderly.

Union

Chamberlain, Tom: Josh ChamberlainÂ’s younger brother and aide. Inexperienced idealist.

Gibbon, John: detached commander who has three brothers fighting for the Confederates.

Hazlett, Charles: artillery commander who supports Chamberlain at Little Round Top and is killed there.

Hooker, Joseph(Fighting Joe): head of the Army of the Potomac until Meade replaces him shortly before Gettysburg.

Howard, Oliver: his 11 th Division (the Dutchmen) runs at Gettysburg and he must submit to HancockÂ’s command.

Kilrain, Buster: father-figure aide to Chamberlain. Experienced realist.


McClellan, George: early head of the Union army who was well-liked by the troops but replaced for being too cautious.

Rice, James: his New York regiment fought alongside Chamberlain and the 20 th Maine at Little Round Top.

Sickles, Daniel: former politician famous for killing a man who was having an affair with his wife.

Vincent, Strong: ChamberlainÂ’s commander.
