Before the publication of The Catcher in the Rye, Salinger published a number of stories that have not been collected in an authorized edition. These stories appeared from 1940 to 1948 in the magazines Collier's, Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Story, Esquire, Mademoiselle, and Good Housekeeping. One of the stories, "I'm Crazy," included passages that Salinger later used in The Catcher in the Rye. It appeared in the December 22, 1945, issue of Collier's. A complete list of Salinger's stories, with their dates of publication, is in Warren French's J. D. Salinger.
