She is blonde, gentle, and beautiful, without the passionate self- will that destroyed her mother. However, she has much of the first Catherine in her and, therefore, outwits Heathcliff. Heathcliff forces her to marry Linton, but she later marries Hareton for love. Linton Heathcliff The weak and peevish son of Heathcliff and Isabella Linton. After marrying Cathy, he dies an early death. Hareton Earnshaw The son of Hindley and Frances Earnshaw. Illiterate and rough in speech and dress, he has good looks, a strong bearing, and a willingness to learn. His good traits lead Cathy to love him. Isabella Linton Edgar Linton's sister, who becomes the unloved wife of Heathcliff and the mother of Linton Heathcliff. Ellen Dean (Nelly) The housekeeper at Wuthering Heights and later at Thrushcross Grange. She tells Lockwood about Heathcliff's troubled history. Lockwood The tenant of Thrushcross Grange who narrates parts of the story. His housekeeper, Nelly Dean, tells much of it to him. Minor Characters Mr. Earnshaw Hindley and Catherine's father, who brought Heathcliff to Wuthering Heights. He is a kind man who prefers Heathcliff to his own son.
Mrs. Earnshaw Hindley and Catherine's mother, who dies less than two years after Mr. Earnshaw brings home Heathcliff. Mr. Linton Edgar and Isabella's father, who dies of a fever. Mary Linton Edgar and Isabella's mother, who also dies of the fever contracted from Catherine Earnshaw. Joseph An old servant at Wuthering Heights. He has a heavy Yorkshire accent and is loyal to Heathcliff. Frances Earnshaw The wife of Hindley Earnshaw and mother of Hareton Earnshaw. Hindley goes to pieces after her death.
