Major Characters

Tommo

He is the principal character and narrator of the novel. He escapes from his ship and sets out on an unknown adventure into the heart of the Typee valley.

Toby

A shipmate of Tommo, also filled with an spirit of adventure, and so joins Tommo in his journey. Toby proves to be a source of help for Tommo at many instances.

Mehevi

One of the chieftains of Typee, he takes Tommo and Toby into his fold and treats them as one of his people.

Kory-Kory

The son of Marheyo and Tinor. He makes himself the servant of Tommo, carrying him everywhere, feeding him and looking out for all his needs.

Marheyo

Kory-KoryÂ’s father, and an otherwise placid old man who spends much of his time building his hut. It is he, who helps Tommo to escape from Typee.

Marnoo

A young man with an extensive knowledge about the world around him. He is the only one who has admission to all the villages in the island.

Tinor

Kory-KoryÂ’s mother and a busybody, who spends her time doing one chore or another.

Captain Vangs

The captain of his ship "dolly."

Kolory

A knight templar, or a soldier priest, he goes around carrying "Moa Artua" a wooden image and even speaks to it.

Karky

A native artist in tattooing, he shows deep interest in tattooing Tommo too, and it is with the greatest difficulty that Tommo manages to extricate himself from KarkyÂ’s clutches.

Karakoee

A native who however is ‘taboo’ to the others in the valley for having accepted the life of the whites.

Fayaway

Though not given importance as a character, forms an important figure for Tommo, who is entranced by her beauty.
