Minor Characters

Duke of Milan - father to Silvia. He wants to arrange his daughter's marriage with Thurio. When he learns from Proteus of Valentine's plans to elope with Silvia, he banishes him. In the end he is impressed by Valentine's valor and consents to his marriage to Silvia.

Antonio - father to Proteus. He wants his son to go to the Duke's court in Milan so that he will be "tried and tutored in the world."

Thurio - a foolish rival to Valentine and the suitor whom the Duke favors for Silvia.


Eglamour - an old chivalrous knight who accompanies Silvia on her journey to the forest.

Panthino - servant to Antonio. He advises Antonio about the future prospects of his son, Proteus.

Lucetta - waiting-woman to Julia. Though she warns Julia about the formidable journey to Milan, she accompanies her disguised as a page.

Crab - Launce's dog. A non-vocal, but effective character.
