He runs toward it with great difficulty (because of his burden) and finally reaches a Cross and a Sepulcher. At that moment, his burden falls off his back. Feeling the freedom from his burden, he begins to cry with relief. Three angels come to him, clothe him in reinvents and give him a roll with a seal on it. The roll is his pass into the Celestial City. They tell him his sins are forgiven and urge him on his journey. As Christian proceeds on the road, newly saved and without his cumbersome burden, he comes across three men named Simple, Sloth and Presumption. They are sleeping in the road and when Christian tries to wake them up, they ignore him. Later he meets two men named Formalist and Hypocrisy, who are trying to climb the wall and take a short cut to the Celestial City. Christian admonishes them, reminding them there is no short cut to heaven. They laugh at him. As the three go further, they reach Difficulty Hill. While the two men take the easier paths, called Danger and Destruction, Christian takes the more difficult one uphill, as the Evangelist had warned him. Both Formalist and Hypocrisy fall off their paths and die. On reaching a pleasant place on the hill, Christian stops and falls asleep. An unidentified voice wakes him and admonishes him for sleeping. He hurries ahead toward the gate, realizing he has lost his Roll. Knowing he cannot go to the Celestial City without it, he goes back in search of it. After much misery and tears, he at last finds it. As he goes on his way, he sees a palace called Beautiful and he hurries toward it. There are two lions at the gate that make him suddenly afraid. He falters until the porter, Watchful, urges him to have faith and proceed. Christian passes safely and at the gate, asks to spend the night. A beautiful lady named Discretion takes him in. She introduces him to Piety, Prudence, and Charity. After talking till late in the night about his journey, Christian rests. The next morning the three ladies take him on a tour of the beautiful house, showing him the library filled with old books and letters. They take him to the armory and show him the weapons the Lord provides for the pilgrims. Finally, they take him to the roof, showing him the Delectable Mountains in the distance. They tell him he should head for the mountains where he will become one of the shepherds of the Lord. To prepare him for the treacherous journey, they arm him with a sword, a shield, a helmet, and a breastplate.
