Both Carol and Kennicott visit KennicottÂ’s mother at Lac-Qui- Meurt. Carol finds that WillÂ’s mother has a hushed and delicate breeding and has retained a childÂ’s miraculous power of wonder. She tells Carol that Kennicott is hard working but is too serious. She is happy that Carol has taught him to laugh. Looking at her feeling happy about her sonÂ’s happiness Carol realizes that Kennicott is very mature and matter of fact. She feels happy to see that he has his motherÂ’s qualities like trusting and integrity and like her he too never pried. She regains her confidence in her self during her stay at Lac-Qui-Merut. When they return to Gopher Prairie their friends greet them noisily. Sensing their friendliness Carol feels that they were content with life as it was. In sharp contrast she set very high standards and fretted because she could not have violin concerts in paneled rooms. Vida calls often to inform about how people started liking Carol. But Carol resents VidaÂ’s knowledge of how the people of Gopher Prairie ridiculed her. She also finds it difficult to meet VidaÂ’s demands to go with her to attend the meetings of the Thanatopsis club.

She finds her maid Bea to be a dependable friend. Though she was brought up to believe that servants belonged to an inferior species, she finds Bea to be superior to many of the Jolly Seventeen members. Bea admires Carol. But Carol feels the admiration is not the typical humbleness of a servant, but the admiration of a freshman for a junior. Carol enjoys the welcome Bea gives her every time she returns. They discuss menus and confide in one another.

Carol finds it impossible to meet the members of the Jolly Seventeen alone. She goes to their monthly meetings escorted by Kennicott and makes no effort to impress anyone or change anything. She becomes quite passive. Once when Kennicott is out of town for a patientÂ’s operation and Bea goes visiting a cousin Carol prefers to sit alone at home even though it is it is the day for the monthly supper at Jolly Seventeen.
