Another main character of the story Dr. Will Kennicott is
introduced in this chapter. He is older than Carol. But he is from
Gopher Prairie and he declares to Carol that she is the one who
could transform it. Carol's dream all along was to belong to a
prairie village. So Dr. Kennicott must be godsend. The doctor is
obviously in love with her. He talks to Carol about suffrage and
other topics that are interesting and significant to her. Carol finds
him very friendly. Obviously Kennicott knows how to handle
Carol, for he seems to succeed where the other admirers of Carol
failed. Carol confesses to him that she is bored with her work.
Like many of the Gopher Prairie people, as Carol would discover
later, Kennicott considers his town to be the best and proudly
informs her that the famous auto manufacturer Bresnahan was
born and brought up in Gopher Prairie.
The focus in this chapter is on the courtship of Dr.Will
Kennicott. He has to woo her by taking her for long walks. He
does not have to promise her the sky but has to implore her
honestly to make his town more artistic. He has to show her
snapshots of Gopher Prairie to allure her. He shows her a photo
of a woman whom he operated upon on her kitchen table with his
driver giving the anesthetic. He is convinced that his patients
need her sensitive hands to help them. The photos move Carol.
But the courtship has its mundane side too. Kennicott is a well to
do young man who finds the girl attractive. And Carol is a
woman disillusioned with her work and with fears that life is
slipping past. Perhaps this is reason enough for them to fall in
love. But Dr. Kennicott has to use all unconventional methods,
consisting mainly conversations, to win Carol's love and wait for
a whole year to marry her.
