BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Author Information

Jerome Lawrence is a playwright and a director who has had a prolific professional life. He has received numerous recognition's in the field of drama, including two Peabody awards. He has worked as a visiting professor at Ohio State University and was a master playwright at New York University, at Baylor University, and at the Salzburg Seminar in American Studies. He is currently an adjunct professor in the graduate school at the University of Southern California.


Robert E. Lee was educated in his hometown of Elyria, Ohio, then at Northwestern and Ohio Weslayan Universities. He was the co- founder of the Armed Forces Radio Service and the American Playwrights Theater. He also served as an adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles for twenty years and was part of the Executive Writers' Committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts, and Sciences. Lee died in 1994.

Together, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee wrote Inherit the Wind, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, and Auntie Mame. Jerome Lawrence also wrote Actor: The Life and Times of Paul Muni. Inherit the Wind was made into a movie in the 1960s.
