It was built approximately 160 years earlier during the time of the Puritan settlement in America. LIST OF CHARACTERS Major Characters Judge Pyncheon A descendant of the original owner and heir to the property. Hepzibah A cousin of Judge Pyncheon, who occupies one of the gables in the ihouse. Phoebe A country cousin of the Pyncheons, who has come to stay at the house.
Hepzibah Holgrave A daguerreotypist by profession and a descendant of Matthew Maule. He resides in one of the gables. Clifford Hepzibah's brother, who comes and lives with her, after thirty long years of imprisonment. Minor Characters Uncle Venner The philosopher of the street. Matthew Maule The original owner of the plot where the house was built. Colonel Pyncheon The person who built the house of the seven gables. Alice Pyncheon An ancestor of the present day Pyncheon. Noel Huggins A little boy who was Hepzibah's customer and often bought gingerbread cookies. Dixey Another customer who had predicted that Hepzibah's cent shop would be a failure.
