Notes

Biff BrannonÂ’s conscious thoughts are explored in this chapter. He is the watcher of the novel. He is curious about people, especial Singer and his satellites Mick, Jake, and Doctor Copeland. Biff also collects facts. He likes to think of history and collects newspapers, arranged and cross indexed, as if he were a scholar. He is a man whose mind is always busy thinking about other peopleÂ’s motivations and concerns. In the months since his wifeÂ’s death, he seems to have begun to examine his own as well. He has an uncomfortable crush on Mick Kelly. Because of the fact that she is a girl, he feels shame about this, but he doesnÂ’t act on it more than to be a little too eager to see her.

With Biff, McCullers further explores the falseness of gender boundaries that she has also touched on with Mick Kelly. Four months after his wifeÂ’s death, Biff is wearing her perfume and washing his hair in her lemon solution. He has re-decorated his bedroom with the eye of a loving homemaker. He wishes more than anything to be a mother to children.
