KEY LITERARY ELEMENTS

SETTING

The novel Demian was written in 1919. It has been set around the time of the First World War. The earlier half of the novel is set in Sinclair's home, his school and the road where Sinclair and Demian walk. Then it shifts to the boarding house, the bar and the park. Chapter Seven is set in the house where Demian and his mother lived. The setting then continues through a journey after which it shifts to the University of H.I. In the final chapter the setting shifts to the summerhouse and later to the front during war. After this in quick succession the setting moves to a stable, a wagon and then to a large hall.
